Overview

What is meaning? How do we use words to convey meanings? How does our grammatical knowledge interact with the interpretive system. This seminar will provide answers to these and other questions while providing a gentle introduction to the formal techniques used in research on the semantics of natural language. A basic foundation will thus be built for any further courses in linguistics or computational linguistics that concern themselves with problems of meaning and interpretati

Requirements:

Doing semantics (rather than just talking about it) requires practice. For this reason half of the grade for the course will consist of homework assignments. Additionally, a (brief) referat will be required, in which the basic ideas from a classic paper from Portner & Partee are presented. Finally, in the last weeks of the course, we will develop a small question answering system.
