Workshop description

Semantic theory in the Montagovean tradition mainly relies on speakers' judgments on the meaning and use of linguistic expressions. In recent years there has been considerable increase of interest in empirical data that go beyond intuitive judgments and include data resulting from experiments investigating the production and comprehension of linguistic utterances. Since these experiments refer to linguistic processing, the question is raised of what they tell us about the semantics of natural language. Quoting Bosch (2008):

"Such experiments provide us with information about language processing in the first instance, and only indirectly about linguistic knowledge - while it has been linguistic knowledge, and not linguistic processing, that has been in the focus of theoretical linguistics for most of the last half century. So how can the evidence collected in such experiments be used to confirm or disconfirm claims made in theoretical linguistics about a speaker's knowledge of the language? Or, from another perspective, how can linguistic theory be of use for a theory of language processing?"

The aim of the workshop is to clarify the role of empirical evidence in the investigation of the semantics of natural languages.
