Structure and Organisation of the Cognitive Science Bachelor
Programm

The Bachelor programme is designed to provide a sound foundation in the core areas of Cognitive Science (Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Psychology, Computational Linguistics, Neurobiology, Neuroinformatics, Neuro Science, Philosophy of Mind). Particular emphasis is on the methods employed in these fields and on their interdisciplinary relations.

Students will aquire empirical skills, analytical skills and also engineering skills. Beyond this, students are introduced to more advanced topics in their selected areas of study.

The Bachelor programme is comprised of 180 credits according to ECTS (including thesis) spread over six semesters, one of which (preferably the fifth semester) must be spent at a foreign university. The programme is completed with a Bachelor thesis (15 credits according to ECTS) and leads to a "Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)" degree in Cognitive Science. Languages of instruction are English and German.

The courses of the Cognitive Science programme are documented in English and German in accordance with ECTS. The programme addresses German and foreign students.

Examination requirements for the Bachelor degree are mainly documented by continuous assessments (as opposed to final examinations).

Admission & Application Deadline

The Bachelor programme accepts students for the winter term only. For the application deadline, see application [1].

Courses and examination aquired at a different University can be accredited on the basis of ECTS.

Tuition Fees

In addition to a semester fee of approximately 210 EUR (which includes the "Semesterticket" for public transport), tuition fees of 500 EUR are charged per semester for students that begin their studies in winter term 2006/2007. For students matriculated before winter term 2006/2007 the tuition fee will be due from summer term 2007 on (further information on tuition fees [2]). Students must provide proof of health insurance upon registration.

Semester abroad

Students of the Bachelor programme are expected to spend one semester abroad - preferably the fifth semester and preferably at a university with a Cognitive Science program or a program in one of its core areas. Study fees have to be paid by the students. Scholarships can be applied for, e.g. within the SOCRATES/ERASMUS program, see Semester Abroad [3].

Student Advisory Service

The student advisory service offers personal advice regarding study programme, examinations, possibilities of changing the subject, studies abroad, and all other matters concerning one's studies, see Student Advisory [4] > Advisors for the Bachelor programme

Mentoring

Besides the student advisory service there is a mentoring program: Experienced students support freshmen and may connect to a university teacher who acts as mentor over the whole period of study, offering the student advice on all questions concerning his/her studies. Contact:

Moreover, the first year of study is accompanied by tutorials held by senior students under the guidance of the lecturer. This provides assistence to newcomers and promotes cooperation between students.

We especially encourage foreign students participating in the Master's programme to act as tutors for first-year students to promote intercultural exchange.

The International Welcome Center [5] helps and supports students from abroad in all matters of daily life.
