CHANGING BRAINS

  CHANGING BRAINS
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The project „Changing Brains“ studies the effects of our growing knowledge about the brain’s plasticity on anthropological, ethical, and social questions. Plasticity is a ubiquitous phenomenon of the brain that is influenced by many processes. Movements, perception, emotional states, higher cognitive processes like learning, attention, language, and reasoning, as well as social interaction induce and underlie plastic processes. The goal of the project is twofold: First, it will reflect on the state-of-the art, on promises, and perils of empirical research on plasticity. Second, it scrutinizes anthropological, ethical, and social consequences of that research. Alterability is becoming a powerful concept in understanding our way of being. The project investigates the manifold implications for individuals and society thereof. By dissemination to scientists and the public we aim to raise awareness for the topic and prepare the ground for scholarly, political, and public discussion.

The CHANGING BRAINS project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung)
