CHANGING BRAINS - Dr. Saskia Nagel

I am post-doctoral researcher at the Institute of Cognitive Science and principal investigator of the interdisciplinary research group “Changing Brains”. We investigate plasticity and its implications from various perspectives.
My interest is empirical and philosophical: In the neurosciences it ranges from empirical questions on multimodal perception and sleep to sensory substitution and enhancement. In philosophy I am mostly concerned with ethical, anthropological, and social investigations with respect to the life sciences, in particular neuroscience. I am also interested in philosophy of mind and philosophy of language.
After a studium generale in Tübingen I studied cognitive science and philosophy in Osnabrück (Germany) and Rutgers (New Jersey, USA). I did an internship at the Max-Planck-Institute for Brain Research (Frankfurt), and graduated with a Master thesis on multimodal integration using EEG. I was visiting researcher at the Hastings Center for Bioethics in 2007. During my PhD I investigated questions in applied ethics of the neuroscience, focusing on questions of neuro-enhancement.
I seek to contribute to science communication, and to intensify the dialogue between academia and the public, including policy. I am associate of the “stiftung neue verantwortung” (a think tank between science, economy, and policy working on pressing social questions), and I work on questions of technological risk assessment. I was member of the European Platform for Life Sciences, Mind Sciences, and the Humanities (funded by the Volkswagen foundation) working on “neuroscience in context”.
I am grateful for having received funding from the German National Academic Foundation during my studies and during my PhD. I received two prizes for excellent studies during my study courses. My PhD was awarded the Barbara-Wengeler price in 2010, honoring research pursuing the interaction of the neurosciences and philosophy.
